Eastern Connecticut Blanks Fitchburg State, 2-0
The Fitchburg State women’s soccer team kicked off the 2012 season this evening, falling 2-0 to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University in opening round action of the ECSU Warriors Classic.
Kirouac collects seven saves in Falcons season-opening loss
MANSFIELD, Conn. (August 31, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team kicked off the 2012 season this evening, falling 2-0 to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University in opening round action of the ECSU Warriors Classic.
Eastern Connecticut jumped out to an early lead just ten minutes into the opening frame as junior Chelsea Downer (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage. Junior Kaitlyn Kennedy (Burlington, Conn./Lewis A. Mills) assisted on the play.
In the second half, the Warriors double their lead (2-0) in the 74th minute when junior Nicole Leonard (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) received a feed from senior Kelly Wallace (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and slipped the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State was limited to just two shots, while Eastern Connecticut peppered the Falcons defense with 27 attempts on the night. The Warriors also grabbed a commanding 8-0 advantage in corner kicks, controlling play for a majority of the contest.
Between the pipes, junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered seven saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while junior Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield, Conn./Litchfield) made one stop for the Warriors to earn the win.
Fitchburg State (0-1, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it battles Manhattanville College in the consolation round at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Connecticut (1-0, 0-0 LEC) will face Saint Joseph's College in the championship round at 7:00 p.m.
