Fitchburg State Blanks Saint Joseph’s, 2-0
Flegg lifts Falcons to third victory of the season with complete game shutout
AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 17, 2011) – The Fitchburg State baseball team closed its 2011 Florida trip in winning fashion, defeating Saint Josephs' College (Me.), 2-0 at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
The Falcons received a solid outing from sophomoreTynan Flegg (Calgary, AB/National Sport Academy), who registered his first complete game shutout in a Fitchburg State Uniform. Flegg kept the Monks off balance all contest, scattering five hits with three walks and three K's while going the distance.
Offensively, Fitchburg State out-hit Saint Joseph's, 8-5, behind a 2-for-4 performance from senior Nick Rocheleau (Leominster, Mass./Leominster). Rocheleau finished the contest with a pair of singles and one RBI, while sophomore Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) plated the first Falcon run with an RBI single. Senior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and sophomore Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) were also strong, sporting one hit and one run scored each.
Fitchburg State opened the contest with an early one run lead as Phelan led off the contest with a double to left field and later scored on a Boice single up the middle. The Falcons added an insurance marker in the top of the sixth frame as well as Rocheleau plated Bamforth with an RBI base-hit to center.
On the mound, Flegg controlled the tempo of the contest, holding Saint Joseph's to only one hit over the final five innings of play for the victory. The first-year southpaw went the distance, tossing only 113 pitches for his first victory of the season.
Fitchburg State (3-6, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it opens its Northeast slate, hosting Anna Maria College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Joseph's College (Me.) in a single game starting at 9 a.m. Saint Joseph (2-5, 0-0 GNAC) will face Framingham State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
