Ice Hockey Topped By Greyhounds In Non-Conference Action
Sargent, Skaggs & Macchioni net one goal each for the Green & Gold
Fitchburg, MA - The Fitchburg State ice hockey team suffered a tough 5-3 setback to the Greyhounds of Assumption University this evening in non-conference action from the Wallace Civic Center.

How It Happened
Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 4:33 mark as senior Nolan Sargent (Littleton, CO) collected a feed from freshman Devin Niles (Hatfield, MA) and classmate Aleksei Filimonov (St. Petersburg, Russia) and buried a shot inside the near post for his first tally on the season for the 1-0 edge.
Assumption knotted the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute of action when junior Jonathan Surrette (Woburn, MA) found the back of the net for his fourth tally on the season with an assist from senior Jake DiNapoli (North Reading, MA).
The Falcons regained the advantage at the 11:36 mark with sophomore Marcus Macchioni (N. Kingstown, RI) receiving a pass from junior Hunter Dunn (Douglas, MA) and classmate Alexandre Bauvais (Meddon, France) and deposited a shot into the right side of the net for his second marker of the year for the 2-1 edge.
The Greyhounds retied the contest two minutes later as junior Daniel Lemanski (Clinton, MA) connected on his first score of the 2025-26 campaign with an assist from junior Leo Piandes (Arlington, MA) to make the score 2-2.
In the middle stanza, Assumption took the lead late in frames when senior Shane McElhaney (Swansea, MA) netted a power-play marker for the 3-2 advantage.
In the final period of play, trailing 4-2, the Green and Gold answered with just over two minutes remaining in the stanza when senior Trenton Skaggs (Oconomowoc, WI) collected a feed from Niles, who fired a shot into back of the net for his second goal of the season to make the score 4-3.
Assumption secured the victory though when Surrette netted an empty netter for his second tally of the contest, resulting in the 5-3 final.
