White’s Buzzer Beater Propels Falcons To Victory Over Engineers

White hits buzzer beating three pointer to give Falcons a 75-72 victory

Fitchburg, MA – The Fitchburg State Men's Basketball earned a 75-72 victory over the Engineers of MIT this evening in non-conference action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 75, MIT 72

How It Happened

First Half

MIT took a 4-0 advantage on a pair of buckets from junior Isaac Dobie (Kitty Hawk, NC) before Fitchburg State answered as junior Jalen Jackson (Aan Antonio, TX) converted an and one to make the score 4-3. The Engineers extended the lead to 15-5 though on a Wyatt Mowery (Winston-Salem, NC).

The Falcons cut the deficit to 19-13 with junior Braeden White (Spencer, MA) and Jackson knocking down three pointers, but the visitors responded when Mowery netted a layup (21-13).

MIT pushed the advantage to 23-16 on a pair of free-throws by freshman Henry Marshall (Chicago, IL) before the Green and Gold went on a 13-5 run to take lead with senior Nicolas Von Zboray (Sacramento, CA) and Jackson burying three-balls as well as layup from senior Duvall Price (Lanham, MD) for the 32-27 edge going into the break.

Second Half

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State upped the margin to 36-32 with Von Zboray and junior Takoma Rosario (Vista, CA) netting buckets before MIT regained the lead (42-39) when senior Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, FL) drained a three-pointer.

The Falcons reduced the margin to 48-46 with Jackson and junior Joshua Jean Charles (Dorchester, MA) notching baskets, but the Engineers extended the lead to 60-54 on a three-pointer by junior Michael Zhang (Jacksonville, FL) and layup from sophomore Jackson Weiland (Medford, OR).

The Green and Gold retook the lead 71-68 when Von Zboray drained a three-ball and senior Jeremiah Simeon (Norwalk, CT) converted a layup and free-throw, but MIT retied the contest at 72-72 when Delgado-Gonzalez hit a layup. The Falcons sealed the victory however with White draining a 40 foot buzzer beating three-pointer, resulting in the 75-72 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Jackson led the way for the Falcons with a game-leading 29 points, nine rebounds and one assist
  • Price added 11 points, three caroms, two assists, one steal and four blocks
  • For the Engineers, Dobie finished with a team-best 23 points, six boards and one block
  • Delgado-Gonzalez chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal
  • Fitchburg State shot 24-for-67 (35.8%) from the field and (8-of-24) 33.3% from three point range
  • MIT finished 20-of-46 (43.5%) overall and (7-for-13) 53.8% for beyond the arc
  • The Engineers held a 50-32 edge on the glass
