With the victory, head coach Bruce Walberg became the Fitchburg State women’s soccer program’s all-time winning coach, posting his 51st career victory. Throughout his six year tenure, Walberg has coached 21 MASCAC All-Conference players, while leading the Falcons to four MASCAC playoff berths and one ECAC Tournament berth.
Fitchburg State collects its first league victory of the season in shocking fashion as Cameron’s ball in the 94th minute found the back of the net from 45 yards out. The freshman sweeper sent the ball into the box looking for a Falcon forward, but the ball took a big bounce over Viking goaltender Leah Potcner’s (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) head for the game-winning score.
After a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State registered several winning attempts down the stretch of the second period as senior Heather Sharp (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake) and junior Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) rifled off solid targets, but each time Potcner was in position to keep the game scoreless. Sharp also looked to have the game-winner in hand with three minutes left in regulation but a diving header save from Adele Pasquareillo (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) kept the game in a 0-0 deadlock.
Salem State also threatened in the closing minutes of the second frame as Casey Connolly (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott) came within five yards of the go ahead goal, but a diving slide tackle save by Fitchburg State junior Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) set up Cameron’s heroic in the extra period.
Fitchburg State and Salem State both battled throughout the contest with each team posting 14 shots attempts, but the Falcons 1-0 shot advantage in the overtime period prove to be the deciding factor. In net, Potcner was strong for the Vikings, totaling six saves in the complete game effort, while freshman Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) notched four stops for her first collegiate shutout.
Fitchburg State (3-2-0, 1-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to UMass Boston at 3:30 p.m. Salem State (2-3-1, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will visit Southern Maine on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
