Fitchburg State Shoots Past Curry, 3-1
The Fitchburg State womens soccer team opened its 2010 campaign in convincing fashion, defeating Curry College, 3-1 in non-conference action this evening.
Dowson, Kimball and Kennedy spark Falcons to first victory of the season
MILTON, Mass. (September 2, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women’s soccer team opened its 2010 campaign in convincing fashion, defeating Curry College, 3-1 in non-conference action this evening.

Fitchburg State opened the contest with an early 1-0 lead as junior Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) teamed up with freshman Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) for the Falcons first goal of the season. Jamieson ignited the Falcons rally with a crisp cross pass to Dowson, who continued play with a solid touch shot past the Colonel keeper.
Curry battled back however, knotting the score at 1-1 through one half of play as freshman Britney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) registered her first collegiate goal in the 32nd minute. McLaughlin collected a loose-ball, rebound off a Fitchburg State save and slipped past keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) to net the equalizer.
In the second half, Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front, controlling play with 16 attempts on net. Senior Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) sparked the Falcons second half surge, connecting for the eventual game-winner off a long pass from Heather Sharp (Halifax., Mass./Silver Lake) in the 53rd minute. Junior Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) secured the Falcons victory late in the contest, adding an unassisted marker at the 84:33 mark.
Fitchburg State rolled offensively, outshooting the Colonels 29-14 in the contest. Senior Mary Lindberg (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) paced the Falcons attack with seven shots, including four on target, while Kimball and Jamieson tallied five attempts apiece. Defensively, freshman keeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) earned the victory for the Falcons, posting five saves over 57 minutes of work, while sophomore Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) notched 13 stops for Curry.
Fitchburg State (1-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it host Plymouth State University at 12 p.m. Curry (0-1, 0-0 TCCC) will host Emerson College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
