Fitchburg State Runs Past Eastern Nazarene, 5-2
The Fitchburg State women’s soccer team open its 2008 schedule with an impressive 5-2 victory over Eastern Nazarene College in a non-conference matchup this afternoon at Bradley Field.
Wundt becomes 4th all-time goal scorer with four scores in season opener
QUINCY, Mass. (August 30, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team open its 2008 schedule with an impressive 5-2 victory over Eastern Nazarene College in a non-conference matchup this afternoon at Bradley Field.
Junior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) led all scorers with a game-high four goals, making her the fourth all-time goal scorer (25) in Falcon history. With her four goals on the day, Wundt moves within four scores of tying the Fitchburg State all-time career goals record of 29.
Sophomore Heather Sharp (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake) also added a goal for the Falcons, while sophomore Melanie Olson (Sandown, N.H./Timberlake), junior Ashley Dutcher (Littleton, Mass./Littleton), and sophomore Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) chipped in with one assist each.
Eastern Nazarene jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but Fitchburg rallied off two goals before the end of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Sharp ignited the Falcon offense with her first goal of the season, before Wundt deposited her first goal of the game off an assist from Olson.
In the second half, Fitchburg opened its lead to 4-1 as Wundt connected for back-to-back goals with help from Courtney Kimball. Eastern Nazarene tallied another goal late in the second half, cutting the Falcon lead to 4-2, but Wundt responded with her fourth goal of the match to clinch the win for Fitchburg.
Junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) started the first half for Fitchburg, going 45 minutes with two saves, while classmate Kyla Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) started the second half in net, going 45 minutes with three saves.
Fitchburg State (1-0, 0-0 MASCAC) is back in action on Tuesday as it travel to Curry College for a match starting at 6:30pm. Eastern Nazarene (0-1, 0-0 CCC) will travel to UMass Boston on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
