Fitchburg State Takes Down Raiders, 12-6

Laferiere breaks draw-control program record in Falcons win

Nashua, N.H. - The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team earned their second consecutive win as they defeated Rivier University, 12-6 in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Raiders drop to 1-6 on the season. With the win, the Falcons improve their record to 2-1 on the year.

The game began with Jaimee Lutz scoring an unassisted goal for the Falcons at the 29:07 mark. Another goal by Brianna Dunn at the 27:05 mark gave the Falcons a two goal cushion over the Raiders. Less than a minute later, Corinne DeSimone scored the third unassisted goal for the Green & Gold to give them the three-goal cushion. 

Taylor Lirakis put the Raiders on the board with an impressive unassisted goal at the 24:13 mark. Just when the Raiders were starting to get going on offense, Fitchburg State fought back with a few goals of their own. Shae O'Connell scored a man-up goal at the 17 minute mark. Five minutes later, the Raiders, with a free position shot, were able to trim the Falcon lead to just two when Taylor Lirakis scored for Rivier. The Falcons would answer right back with an impressive three goal run to re-establish their lead at 8-3 heading into halftime.

Rivier scored the first goal of the second half when Savannah Neuwirt off of a pass from Taylor Lirakis for the Raiders at the 28:49 mark. Goals by DeSimone, Andrea Comeau, and Ali Laferriere gave Fitchburg State the 11-4 edge at the 21:43 mark. A goal by O'Connell at the 16:24, and another goal by Taylor Lirakis at the 7:21 gave the Raiders a much needed spark. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough, as Fitchburg State would eventually go on to seal the victory 12-6.

The Falcons were led by DeSimone with three goals and one assist, while Laferriere chipped in with two goals, one helper, and six draw-controls. Following her second draw control of the contest, Laferriere broke the all-time program record for draw controls, surpassing the previous mark of 160 held by Carissa Kennedy '12.

Rivier was led by Taylor Lirakis with three goals and one assist, while O'Connell had two tallies in the losing effort. Daniel Moran recorded 14 saves in the loss between the pipes.

Fitchburg State will host Becker on Tuesday, March 25 in their home opener at 7:00pm.
