Eight Falcons Earns Spring All-Conference Honors

Women’s lacrosse leads pack with five All-Conference nominations

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 6, 2010) – The Fitchburg State spring athletic teams named eight players to Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) All-Conference teams as announced by league offices earlier this week.

The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team led the pack with five nominations as sophomore Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) took home the top honor being named to the NEWLA All-Conference first team. Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), junior Connie Perry (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial), sophomore Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) and freshman Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) were all named to the NEWLA All-Conference second team.

On the diamond, the Fitchburg State baseball team received two post-season nominations as junior Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) was named to the MASCAC All-Conference second team and freshman Alex Teal (Malden, Mass./Malden) was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Year. Senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) rounded out the Falcon ball players, representing the Fitchburg State softball squad on the MASCAC’s All-Conference first team.

Burns earns her second NEWLA All-Conference honor after leading the Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team to its first-ever post-season berth this season. She tallied a team best 57 goals to go with 16 assists for 73 points, while also leading the Falcons with 38 draw controls. Swan, a two-time NEWLA All-Conference second team honoree, was also strong for the Falcons this season with a team-best 81 points. She became the first Fitchburg State player to post 200 career points, tallying 49 goals and a team-high 32 assists.

Kelley rounds out the list of offensive honorees, earning her first collegiate post-season nod with an All-Conference second team selection. She ranked third in scoring on the Falcons squad, posting 46 points with 27 goals and 19 assists. Kennedy and Perry also received their second consecutive All-Conference accolade after leading the Fitchburg State defense with a combined 102 groundballs, 70 draw controls and 43 caused turnovers.

Alex Teal notched his first collegiate post-season honor being tabbed the MASCAC’s Baseball Rookie of the Year. Teal was strong for the Falcons all season, tossing a team-high 43.0 innings with a 4.11 ERA, 3-4 record and 35 strikeouts. He limited batters to a .261 battering average while posting four complete games. Ware joined Teal with a MASCAC All-Conference second team nod after hitting .307 with 27 hits, four doubles, one homerun and 16 RBI.

Trzcinski wrapped up the Fitchburg State honorees, earning her first career post-season recognition with a MASCAC All-Conference first team award. Trzcinski capped a successful four-year career in record breaking fashion, using a 49 hit season to become the Falcons all-time career hits leader. She led Fitchburg State with an amazing .434 batting average, turning in nine doubles, five triples, one homerun and 14 RBI.
