Women’s Basketball Falls to Chargers in Non-Conference Action

FITCHBURG, MA: The Fitchburg State women's basketball team fell to the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer in non-conference action this afternoon, 73-61. The Falcons women's basketball team also celebrated the life of Beautifull Sanchez, a student-athlete of the team whose life ended far too early this past summer. In attendance was her sister, who accepted her number 12 jersey.

- Records: Colby-Sawyer (3-2), Fitchburg (2-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Chargers ultimately secured the win after a 19-9 first quarter. The Falcons did tie the second with both teams scoring 20-20, and took the third quarter 18-7, but fell in the fourth 17-14. The damage from the first quarter prevented the Falcons from getting within striking distance of a tie or lead change.

- Colby-Sawyer displayed a well-balanced offensive effort, with four student-athletes reaching double digits. Leading the way was Lauren MacDonald, who scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Just behind her was Elyza Mitchell, who contributed 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, earning her a double-double as well. Makenna Grillone and Tanner Drury rounded out the top scorers, with Grillone scoring 11 points and Drury finishing with ten.

- For the Falcons, four players reached double figures. Shanell Smith-Akpan (W. Warwick) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) and Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT) each had 12 points, while Mary Keohane (N. Chelmsford, MA) added 11.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Shooting: Colby-Sawyer 45.2% (28-62), Fitchburg 41.5% (22-53)

-  Three Point Shooting: Colby-Sawyer 29.2% (7-24), Fitchburg 28.6% (4-14)

-  Free Throw shooting: Colby-Sawyer 55.6% (10-18), Fitchburg 52% (13-25)
