Women's Basketball Takes Down Lyons In Non-Conference Action

Keohane nets game best 22 points for Green & Gold

South Hadley, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team earned a 62-53 victory over the Lyons of Mount Holyoke this evening in non-conference action from the Howard Gymnasium.

 The Basic

How It Happened

1st quarter

Fitchburg State jumped out to a 9-2 edge on a pair of buckets from sophomore Erin McNamara (Leominster, MA), while senior Alexis DeSimone (Ashburnham, MA) added a layup before Mount Holyoke trimmed the lead to 13-9 as junior Hannah Goen (New London, NH) registered a bucket,

The Falcons pushed the advantage to 15-11 when sophomore Malaica Guillaume (Everett, MA) netted a layup, but the Lyons capped the first quarter scoring on a free-throw by Goen to make the score 15-12.

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold went on a 10-2 run to open the second quarter for the 25-14 edge, led by freshman Shanell Smith-Akpan (West Warwick, RI) with five points, but the Lyons answered back to cut the deficit to 29-26 with junior Sofia Francisco (Boston, A) connecting on a free throw. The visitors closed out the first half scoring when sophomore Mary Keohane (North Chelmsford, MA) netted a jumper for the 31-26 lead, going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Mount Holyoke reduced the lead to 38-32 as Goen hit a layup before Fitchburg State extended the lead to 41-33 when senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) knocked down a three-ball.

The host answered back to make the score 43-39 with Fransico notched a jumper, but the Falcons pushed the lead to 46-40 with McNamara burying a three pointer.

4th quarter

The Lyons cut the deficit to 53-45 with senior Alex Twomey (Nutley, NJ) hitting a layup before the Green and Gold secured the victory as senior Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) notched a jumper, resulting in the 62-53 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Keohane with a game leading 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals
  • Tanner added 12 points, three caroms, two assists and one steal
  • For the Lyons, Twomey finished with a team best 20 points, eight boards, two assists, three steals and one block
  • Goen chipped in with ten points, three rebounds and two assists
  • Fitchburg State shot 23-for-67 (34.4%) from the field and (8-of-26) 30.8% from three-point range
  • Mount Holyoke went 20-of-67 (29.9%) overall and (4-for-23) 17.4% for beyond the arc
  • Lyons  finished with a 58-34 margin on the glass
