Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Fisher, 73-47
The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team rebounded this evening, posting a 73-47 non-conference victory over Fisher College at the Fitchburg State University Recreation Center.
Falcons collect 12th victory of the season as Fahey and Goreham combined for 25 points
FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 11, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team rebounded this evening, posting a 73-47 non-conference victory over Fisher College at the Fitchburg State University Recreation Center.
Senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) paced a balanced Fitchburg State attack, which witnessed 11-of its 12 players hit the score-sheet, totaling a double-double effort with 13 points and ten boards. Sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) shot 6-of-10 from the field for 12 points and nine rebounds, while Meghan Secino (Leominster, Mass./Leominster), Jackie Boffoli (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Gina Angelini (Fitchburg, Mass./Leominster) notched nine points apiece.
In the first half, Fitchburg State raced out to an early 19-5 advantage, holding Fisher College scoreless for over seven minutes in the run. Fahey and Goreham did the damage for the Falcons, cleaning up under the boards for a combined 19 points and 13 rebounds in the frame. Secino was also solid with seven points (six boards) on 3-of-9 shooting, while Angelini capped the Falcons top first half efforts with six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
In the second half, the Falcons turned to their bench, holding a commanding 45-14 margin at the break. Fitchburg State maintained a 30 point advantage for most of the period, using a 17 point effort from its bench to clinch its 12th victory of the year. Fisher did put a dent in the Falcons lead as Javana Bernard (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) connected with four three pointers for 17 points in the stanza, but Fitchburg State would only let Fisher come within 26, closing the door with a pair of lay-ups from Kristen Enright (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) and Tara Ingram (Palmer, Mass./Palmer).
For the contest, Fitchburg State shot 36.6% from the field, hitting 30-of-82 attempts, while Fisher connected on 16-of-65 shots for the night (24.6%). The Falcons controlled the glass with a 67- 42 advantage on the boards, while causing 23 turnovers with nine steals.
Fitchburg State (12-1, 0-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State at 1 p.m. Fisher (0-19, 0-8 AMC) will host Wilberforce College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
