Falcons used balanced offensive attack with 13 players scoring in contest
FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 10, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort and balanced offensive attack as the Falcons topped Fisher College, 73-28 in non-conference action this evening.

Thirteen players registered points in the contest for Fitchburg State as the Falcons improved to .500 on the season with a 4-4 record. Junior Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) led all scorers with 14 points, draining 4-of-6 from long range, while sophomore Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) tallied nine. Senior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) and junior Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) were also solid with eight points apiece, while junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) sparked the Falcons defense with a game-high eight steals.
Fitchburg State controlled the offensive tempo for much of the contest, holding Fisher to only 28 points, including only 12 in the second half. The Falcons raced out to an early lead led by the hot hand of Duprey, who connected for three consecutive tri-fectas at the midway point. Fitchburg State posted a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers, using 11 steals to grab a 23 point margin at the break.
In the second half, the Falcons continued to soar led by the strong play of its bench. Newcomers Alyssa Fanelli (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg), Vanessa Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) and Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) sparked the Fitchburg State bench with their first collegiate baskets, while Fanelli also turned in a team-best seven boards.
Freshman Tiffany Beckman (East Hartford, Conn.) led the Fisher attack, posting a team-best ten points and eight rebounds, while senior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, Mass.) added six points and four caroms. Freshman Darneisha Ruffin (Stoughton, Mass.) rounded out the Fisher top three with five points and five boards.
Fitchburg State (4-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Emerson College at 12 p.m. Fisher (1-10, 0-0 Sunrise) will visit Rivier College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
