Men place second with 143 points; Women notch fourth place finish with 70 points
WORCESTER, Mass. (March 26, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team competed in the Worcester City Meet this afternoon hosted by WPI. The Falcons men’s team finished second overall with 143 points, while the women placed fourth with 70 points.

On the men’s side, the tandem of sophomore Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) and junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) led Fitchburg State, grabbing three first place finishes and four post-season honors, while sophomore Josh Krepps (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and senior Devon Jennings (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) each tallied personal bests in the javelin (10th - 45.48) and long-jump (2nd - 6.39m) respectively.
Iasevoli led the Falcons on the track, tallying a pair of top honors and All-New England accolades in the 100m (11.12) and 200m (22.62), while also anchoring the 4x100 relay team to a 1st place finish. Muolo paced Fitchburg State in the field, collecting four, top-four finishes, including a first place shot-put effort (13.99m), second place javelin (51.88m), second place discus (42.32m) and a fourth place hammer (46.46m).
Freshman Jimmy DiNuccio (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) was also strong both on the track and the field for Fitchburg State, posting a fifth place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 11.52 and a ninth place showing in the javelin with a distance of 45.48m. Sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) rounded out the men’s top performers with a great, double effort, registering a second place finish in the 800m (2:00.03) and a fifth place finish in the 1500m (4:06.96).
For ladies, sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) continues to perform well, collecting a slew of top three finishes, including a top honors in the 100m dash (12.64). Merchant was also strong in the field, earning third place in the long jump with a distance of 4.58m and third place in the triple jump with a 10.21m effort.
Senior Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, Mass/Agawam) turned in a record breaking performance for Fitchburg State as she became the Falcons 3000m steeplechase record holder. Fortunato totaled a personal best time in the event, finishing third overall with a time of 13:34.00.
Junior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) and freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) recorded back-to-back finishes in the high-jump for Fitchburg State as each jumped 1.50m for third and fourth place and senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) added a sixth place finish in the hammer toss with a thorw of 33.52.
Rounding out the women’s highlights were freshman throwers Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Megan Gonzalez (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). Gonzalez led all lady throwers with a third place finish in the discus, throwing a personal best 29.41m while Sampson totaled a fourth place finish in the javelin with a distance of 34.44m.
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team will be in action next weekend as it hosts the Jim Sheehan Memorial starting at 11 a.m.
