Men earn sixth place finish with points 65.5 points; women earn eighth with score of 38.5
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 3, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team hosted the annual Jim Sheehan Memorial this afternoon as the Falcons men’s team earned a sixth place finish with 65.5 points, while the ladies placed eight with a score of 38.5

In the men’s events, junior Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) sparked the Falcons, qualifying for the post-season in three individual events and one team event. De La Rosa earned ECAC honors with a first place finish in the triple jump (13.70m) and a second place finish in the long-jump (6.84m), while posting a DIII mark in the 200m dash (22.65). The junior standout also anchored the 4x100 relay of Devon Jennings, Jimmy DiNuccio and Mike Iasevoli, as the Falcons earned a trip to the All-New England’s with a third place time of 42.79.
Junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) also witnessed a career day, leading all Falcons throwers. The Stoneham, Mass. native posted a Fitchburg State program record in the discus, finishing second overall in the event with a toss of 45.33m, while also qualifying for the ECAC’s in the shot-put with a distance of 14.45m for third place.
On the distance side, junior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) led Fitchburg State, posting two, DIII New England marks. Spano earned a fifth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:08.07, while Kibler notched two solid finishes with a third place showing in the 1500m (4:03.56) and a 14th finish in the 800m (2:00.58). Senior Tim Wood (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was also strong in the 1500m, following Kibler into the shoot with a fifth place time of 4:07.90.
On the ladies side, sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) led the Fitchburg State women’s team with a pair of personal best performances, including a DIII, fifth place finish in the triple jump (10.68m) and DIII mark of 5.13m in the long jump (7th). In addition to her solid efforts in the field, Merchant also qualified for the DIII’s in the 100m dash with a sixth placing showing (13.06) and lifted the Falcons 4x100 relay team (Almstrom, Marrone, Abbott) to a third place showing with a time of 52.92
Senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) also notched a personal best on the day, finishing seventh in the hammer throw with a distance of 37.88, while freshman Megan Gonzalez (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) aided the Falcon throwers with a DIII, fifth place finish in the discus (32.20m). Classmate Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) turned in the women’s top finish of the event, placing first overall in the javelin with a throw of 35.02m.
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team will be in action next weekend as it travels to the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
