Muolo tops charts with three, first place honors
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 17, 2010) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team hosted the 2010 Eric Loeschner Memorial this afternoon as both Falcons teams garnered second place finishes with 189 points and 139 points respectively.

Junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) was the top winner of the day for Fitchburg State, taking in three, top-honors in the javelin, discus and shot-put. Muolo notched a first place finish in the javelin with a throw of 50.90m, before posting a discus effort of 47.90m and a shot-put toss of 14.28m.
On the track, the Falcons dominated the 400m dash as sophomore Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass./Ayer), junior Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) and sophomore Jimmy Petersen (Groton, Conn./Fitch) earned third, fourth and fifth place respectively. Iasevoli paced Fitchburg State with a time of 51.47, while De La Rosa (51.55) and Petersen (51.94) followed less than .50 seconds later.
In the 100m, freshman Jimmy DiNuccio (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) continued the Falcons hot streak, earning third place overall with a time of 11.54. DiNuccio also manned the first place, 4x100m relay team, joining forces with De La Rosa, Petersen and senior Devon Jennings (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) for a time of 43.92.
Junior Matt Spano and senior Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) were both strong in the men’s and women’s steeplechase as the duo combined for a pair of first place awards. Spano finished the 3000m layout in a time of 10:05.29, while Fortunato turned in a time of 13:38.47. Sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) was also strong in the distance events, totaling a pair of second place performances in the 1500m (4:01.00) and the 800m (2:00.07).
For the women, sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) put forth the best ladies’ effort, taking home two, first-place finishes and one second place honor. Merchant earned top honors in the long jump (5.06m) and 100m dash (12.91), while finishing strong in the triple jump with a distance of 10.72m.
Freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) was also strong both in the field and on the track as the rookie sensation registered second place in the high-jump with jump of 1.54m. Lane also shined on the track, earning fifth place in the 100m hurdles with at time of 21.69 before rounding out the day with a sixth place pole vault finish (2.21m).
In the circles, freshman duo Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Megan Gonzalez (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) earned top five finishes in three of the four throwing events. Sampson notched the top individual finish with first place in the javelin (37.75m), while Gonzalez earned third in the discus (31.23m) and fourth in the shot-put (9.93m). Senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) capped the Falcons throwing events with a fifth place hammer showing, including a distance of 38.90m.
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track team will be in action next weekend as it competes in the MASCAC/Alliance meet on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
