The Fitchburg State mens and womens indoor track team participated in the Tufts Winter Invitational this weekend following a long winter layoff. The mens team finished 5th overall out of nine teams, while the women placed seventh.
Fitchburg State Races Strong at Tuft's Invitational
Marrone and Leblanc lead men's and women's track teams with top five finishes
MEDFORD, Mass. (January 18, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's and women's indoor track team participated in the Tuft's Winter Invitational this weekend following a long winter layoff. The men's team finished 5th overall out of nine teams, while the women placed seventh.
Sophomore Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) and junior Devon Jennings (Boston, Mass./Brockton) led their respective teams, as both qualified for the New England Division III Championships in the high jump (4-11) and 55 meter dash (6.72) respectively. The women's 4 x 200 meter relay team of freshman Kat Marrone (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central), junior Jen Tabor (Webster, Mass./Bartlett), senior Marla Cavareta (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) also qualified.
In the men's pole vault, sophomore Alex LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass./Oakmont) bettered his Division III New England leading mark with a winning vault of 14 feet 9 inches.
Senior Phil McCormack (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) turned in a solid performance, running 9:00.47 in the 3000 meter run, just missing the New England qualifiers by 0.47 seconds. Sophomore Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) posted a fourth place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:32.13, while senior Brian Schell (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) placed fourth in the 400M with a time of 53.00.
