Men's distance medley opens event with record setting performance
BOSTON, Mass. (January 24, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's track and field distance medley team kicked off the Boston University Terrier Invitational with a record setting performance, posting a time of 10:39.83 in the four-man relay. Overall, the Falcons finished 12th in the event and were the top Division III team in the heat.

th the time, Fitchburg State surpassed the previous program record of 11:04.13 previously held by Victor Perez, Derek Delanski, Matt Germain and Greg St. Mary during the 2000 season. In addition, the Falcons also qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the medley as well as the New England Division III Championships.
Sophomore Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) began the medley for the Falcons, posting a time of 3:16.50 in the 1200m run, while junior Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) finished the 400m run in 50.90 seconds. Senior Shane McDowell (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) ran the third heat for the Falcons, finishing the half-mile run in 1:59.40, while senior Phil McCormack (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) closed out the medley with a 4:33.03 mile.
The 4x400 relay team of Jimmy Peterson, Brian Schell, Alex LeBlanc and Devon Jennings ran solid for the Falcons, bettering their qualifying mark for NCAA Division III All New England's with a time of 3:29.20. The mark also qualified NCAA Division I All New England's.
Sophomore Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke),(22.73), Jennings (23.26) and sophomore Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) (23.56) all posted new Fitchburg State program records in the 200 meter run.
On the women's side, senior Marla Cavarretta (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) ran strong for Fitchburg State, positing a time of 8.29 seconds in the 55 meter dash. Junior Brittany Tessier (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) followed Cavarretta into the gate with a time of 9.37 seconds.
Fitchburg State will be in action again next Saturday as it travels to Tufts University for a meet starting at 11 a.m.
