Falcons fall 7-1 in game one; edged 5-3 in the nightcap
MILTON, Mass. (April 6, 2011) – The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a season sweep to Curry College, 7-1 and 5-3, in a non-conference softball doubleheader this afternoon.
Curry 7, Fitchburg State 1
In the opener, Fitchburg State took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to an RBI single by senior Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) that scored sophomore Alycia McGrail (N. Brookfield, Mass./Brookfield), but Curry went on to plate seven unanswered runs, including a two-run double by Amanda Peters in the bottom of the first.
The Colonels tacked on four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Mikaela Carney. Peters led Curry's offensive attack, hitting 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Taryn Vigeant went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Fitchburg State used a balanced attack on the offensive end with six different players recording individual hits.
In the circle, senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) took the loss for the Falcons (3-6), surrendering six hits, six earned runs, and four walks while striking out three. Janelle Mayo went the distance for the Colonels, striking out seven to improve to 3-6 on the season.
Curry 5, Fitchburg State 3
In the nightcap, Fitchburg State again took a 1-0 lead after a half inning as Monroe singled to right to bring home Skoczylas but Curry responded with two of its own runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons went back on top in the second inning as senior Meghan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) each had RBI hits.
The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when the hosts scored three times for a 5-3 lead. Flaherty connected for the big blow, leading the Colonels to their 11th victory of the season with a two-run double to center field.
Flaherty sparked Curry's game two offense, hitting 3-for-4, while Heather Carrier went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jenkins and Monroe each collected a pair of hits and one RBI to lead the Falcons.
On the rubber, freshman Nancy Henry (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) suffered the loss for Fitchburg State (1-2), yielding ten hits and four earned runs over six innings pitched. Peters (2-3) earned the victory for Curry, tossing a complete-game eight-hitter.
Fitchburg State (7-12, 1-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to MCLA at 1 p.m. Curry (11-13, 6-4 TCCC) hosts Western New England College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
