Fitchburg State Opens New Year At Tufts Invitational
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened the new year at the Tufts Invitational this afternoon hosted by Tufts University.
Kibler and Muolo pace Falcons at first meet of 2012
BOSTON, Mass. (January 14, 2012) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened the new year at the Tufts Invitational this afternoon hosted by Tufts University.
For the men, senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) continued his dominance after the month long break, earning first place overall in the weight throw (17.23m) and second place in the shot-put (14.54m). Sophomore Zach Desrochers (Dracut, Mass./Greater Lowell) joined Muolo with some throwing success, placing fifth in the weight with a toss of 14.90m.
On the track, senior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) placed third in the mile run, posting a time of 4:26.07, while also adding an 11th place finish in the 1000m (2:38.62). Freshman Jim Quinlan (N. Andover, Mass./N. Andover) collected a 15th place performance in the 1000m with a 2:39.91 effort, while junior Will Lary (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) added a seventh place showing in the 800m (2:07.77).
Sophomore Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn./Southington) added another top performance for the Falcons in the pole vault, finishing third overall with a height of 3.70m, while Joseph Hollenbeck (Ashby, Mass./North Middlesex) finished sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.44.
Freshman Ethan Gorecki (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) was strong in the high-jump, placing seventh with a height of 1.61m, while Mark Wesgan (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) completed the triple jump with a distance of 11.75m.
On the women’s side, Fitchburg State received a strong effort from freshmen Arthina Robert (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Voc Tech) and Rachel Blanchard (Billerica, Mass./Shawsheen Valley). Robert was also strong in two events, the 60m (14th – 8.40) and 200m (25th – 29.22), while Blanchard finished well in both the 200m (28.98 – 18th) and the 400m dash (1:06.39 - 11th).
Sophomore Samantha Wilkinson (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) added a tenth place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.90, while Stephanie Irvine (Malden, Mass./Mystic Valley) and Jennifer Berrian (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) chipped in with times of 1:19.07 and 1:23.26 in the 400m.
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s teams will be in action next weekend as it they compete the Greater Boston Track Club on Sunday afternoon.
