Muolo Headed To NCAA Division III National Championships
Senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) will represent Fitchburg State University this week at the 2012 NCAA Track & Field Division III National Championships hosted by Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa) on March 9th and 10th.
Stoneham, Mass. native ranked 13th among nation’s top weight throwers
FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 8, 2012) – Senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) will represent Fitchburg State University this week at the 2012 NCAA Track & Field Division III National Championships hosted by Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa) on March 9th and 10th.
Muolo currently ranks 13th among all Division III throwers in the men’s weight throw, collecting his second trip to the big dance after qualifying for nationals last spring. The senior thrower earned a trip the NCAA Division III National Championships after witnessing a huge week at the MIT Invitational in late January. Muolo set his NCAA qualifying mark in the event with a throw of 18.62m, finishing first overall.
In addition to his national accolades, Muolo also fared well at the DIII New England Championships, All-New England Championships and ECAC Championships. At the DIII’s, Muolo claimed a pair of All-DIII honors, finishing fourth in the weight (17.86m) and fifth in the shot-put (14.85m). The senior thrower garnered All-New England accolades at the All-NE Championships, posting a mark of 17.21m (5th) in the weight, before rounding out his post-season performances this past weekend at the ECAC Championships with a four place finish in the event (18.04m).
For each women’s individual event including the pentathlon, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition, while for each men’s individual event including the heptathlon, the top 13 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams concluded their seasons this past weekend as members of the squads competed at the ECAC Championships at the Armory Track and Field Center.
