Fitchburg State Races At Worcester City Meet
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams were in action this afternoon as they competed at the Worcester City Meet hosted by Worcester State University.
Lane set new school pole vault mark; Muolo notches Falcons new discus record
WORCESTER, Mass. (March 26, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams were in action this afternoon as they competed at the Worcester City Meet hosted by Worcester State University. The women’s team earned a third place finish with 108 total points, while the men also garnered third place honors with 140 points.
For the ladies, sophomore Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) was strong in the field, competing in four throwing events on the day. Sampson notched her best performance in the javelin, placing first overall with a distance of 35.77m. The second-year thrower also added a third place finish in the shot-put (10.13m), while placing fourth and ninth in the weight (34.40m) and discus (28.24m) respectively.
Adding to the list of field accolades was sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) who earned a first place honor in the high-jump. Lane finished with a height of 1.55m, while senior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) followed in second with 1.50m effort. Lane was also solid in the pole vault, placing second overall with a new, Fitchburg State record of 2.75m.
Rounding out the lady field honorees was senior Kara Taupier (Somers, Conn./Somers), who excelled in both the triple jump and long-jump. Taupier collected top honors in the triple jump with a distance of 9.19m, while earning third in the long jump with 4.29m performance. Abbott was also key in the long-jump with a fifth place effort (4.13m), while sophomore Kelsey Chand (Middleboro, Mass./Bristol Plymouth) grabbed third in the triple-jump (8.69m).
On the track, the lady Falcons also had some important performances as sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and junior Katrina Marrone (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) shined. Marrone earned the top finish of the afternoon with first place in the 800m (2:31.67), while Kelley placed sixth in her first collegiate 100m dash (13.92m).
On the men’s side, senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) continues to steal the show, earning yet another Fitchburg State record and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Muolo set the school mark in the discus, finishing first overall with a 48.96m effort. In addition, Muolo also added three more DIII New England qualifiers in the shot-put (14.94m - 2nd), javelin (52.40m - 3rd) and hammer throw (46.14m - 4th).
Freshman Marc Lawrence (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) turned in a strong field performance this afternoon, notching two, sixth place finishes in the long-jump and triple jump. Lawrence turned in a 5.66m effort in the long jump to go with an 11.04m performance in the triple jump. Classmate Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn./Southington) added a 3.30m pole vault for second place overall.
Junior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) captured the crown in the 5000m event, qualifying for the DIII New England’s with a time of 15:27.45, while freshman Kevin James (Athol, Mass./Narragansett) posted a pair of second place honors in the 110m hurdles (17.34) and 400m dash (1:00.36). Senor Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) rounded out the Falcons top runners with first place honors in the 800m (2:03.46).
Fitchburg State will be back in action next weekend as it hosts the Jim Sheehan Memorial on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
