Fitchburg State Competes At George Davis Invitational
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams participated in the 2011 George Davis Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
Merchant and Kelley qualify for DIII NE’s in long jump, triple jump and 400m
LOWELL, Mass. (April 10, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams participated in the 2011 George Davis Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
For the ladies, junior Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) paved the way, qualifying for the DIII New England’s in both the long-jump and triple jump. Merchant finished tenth in the long-jump (5.07m) and 12th in the triple jump (10.33m), while adding a 20th place, 27.47 effort in the 200m dash.
Sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) also turned in a DIII qualifying mark on the afternoon, finishing 14th in the 400m run with a time of 1:01.76, while junior Katrina Marrone (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) finished 16th in the 800m with a time of 2:26.73. Classmate Katy Scott (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) placed 12th in the 5000m run with a time of 24:09.
In the field, sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) was strong with an eighth place pole vault (2.75m) and 12th place high-jump (1.55m), while senior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) followed suit with a 13th place effort in the high-jump (1.50m).
Sophomore Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) also shined in the field, posting strong efforts in the javelin (34.42m) and discus (29.08), while freshman Brittany Chace (Foster, R.I./Ponagansett) placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 34.14m.
For the men, senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) continued to lead the way, posting a trio of top five honors in the discus (1st - 47.75m), hammer (4th - 49.49m), and shot-put (5th - 14.40m), while senior Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) added a sixth place long jump (6.62m) and ninth place triple jump (12.94m).
Freshman Zach Desrochers (Dracut, Mass./Greater Lowell Tech) threw well again for the Falcons, tossing 44.29m in the discus (3rd) and 47.56m in the hammer (5th), while sophomore Michal Lima (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) added a 13th place finish in the javelin (39.34m).
On the track, junior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) sparked Fitchburg State, placing seventh in the 5000m with a time of 15:24.09, while senior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) placed 11th in the 3000m steeplechase with a 10:36.40 time. Freshman Joseph Hollenbeck (Ashby, Mass./North Middlesex) was also bright, placing 17th in the 110m hurdles (24.09) and 18th in the 400m hurdles (1:03.88).
Freshman Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn./Southington) wrapped up the Falcons top performances with tenth place in the pole vault (3.65m).
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will be back in action next Saturday as it travels to MIT at 11 a.m.
