Fitchburg State Competes At Tufts Stampede
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Tufts University as the teams competed in the Tufts Stampede on Saturday afternoon.
Lane posts school record for second straight week in pole vault; Muolo takes weight crown
MEDFORD, Mass. (February 5, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Tufts University as the teams competed in the Tufts Stampede on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) produced yet another school record this past week as the second-year member posted a mark of 2.75m in the pole vault. Lane finished fifth in the event, while adding a second place finish in the high-jump (1.63m), a tenth place effort in the 60m hurdles (9.98) and 13th place showing in the 800m (2:36.80).
Senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) also continued to perform well on the men’s side, earning top honors in the weight throw and fifth place in the shot-put. Muolo maintained his dominance in the weight with a throw of 16.00m, while putting forth a 13.52m effort in the shot.
In addition, junior Julian Stakley (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) qualified for a pair of post-season tournaments, posting a DIII New England and ECAC mark in the 55m dash with a time of 7.05 in the preliminary round, while junior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) and sophomore Will Lary (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) posted season bests in the 800m and 1000m respectively. Kibler finished with a mark of 1:59.9, while Lary carried a time of 2:38.12 in the 1000m. Senior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) also added to the mix, finishing the 3000m in a time of 9:01.69 for sixth overall.
Rounding out the top place getters for the Falcons were field athletes Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) and Michael Lima (Danvers, Mass./Danvers). Lima registered a DIII mark in the weight throw with a toss of 14.38 (8th), while De La Rosa qualified for the MASCAC Championships in the 200m (23.73 – 10th) and triple jump (12.53m -11th).
For the ladies, junior Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) paced the Falcons on the track, finishing eighth overall in the 60m dash with a time of 8.48. Sophomores Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and Megan Gonzalez (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) sparked Fitchburg State in the field as Sampson collected a ninth place weight throw with a distance of 11.60m and Gonzalez notched a tenth place showing in the shot-put (10.36m).
Senior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) wrapped up the Falcons top athletes in the women’s pentathlon, finishing with 1763 points. She took first in the high-jump with a height of 1.56m, while placing second in the shot-put (7.37m), and seventh in the long-jump (4.34m).
The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track teams will be in action again next weekend as it travels to the MASCAC/Alliance meet at 11 a.m.
