Fitchburg State Draws Even With UMass Dartmouth, 1-1 OT
The Fitchburg State ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 overtime draw with UMass Dartmouth this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.
Wolcott collects 33 saves for the Falcons
FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 19, 2013) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 overtime draw with UMass Dartmouth this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.
In the opening period, Fitchburg State nearly grabbed the lead with 2:20 remaining as seniors Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) each fired shots on target but Corsairs goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON./Huntsville Otters) turned aside both attempts to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.
In the second frame, UMass Dartmouth took the lead at the 5:10 mark as sophomore Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirski, Russia./Cape Cod Cubs) collected a loose puck in front of the net and blasted a shot inside the right post for the 1-0 advantage. The Falcons knotted the score (1-1) midway through the period when freshman John Celli (Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) took a feed from sophomore Derek Giansanti (Newington, Conn./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) and sipped a wrist shot into the back of the net for his fifth marker of the season.
Following a scoreless third stanza, the Corsairs nearly secured the victory in the opening minute of overtime as senior Dave McDonald (Wakefield, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) streaked down the middle of the ice and fired a shot on net but Falcon net-minder Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) made the save to preserve the 1-1 tie.
Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 40-34 advantage in shots, while UMass Dartmouth finished 0-for-4 on the power-play. Between the pipes, Wolcott made 33 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Williams matched him saves for save, finishing the night with 39 stops for the Corsairs.
Fitchburg State (6-8-2, 5-4-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it visits Westfield State University to take on the Owls at 7:35 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (6-5-4, 5-2-3 MASCAC) will travel to Plymouth State University on Thursday for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
