With 7:48 to play in the first period, Amherst's conference-best power play unit went on and netted the game's first goal as Matt Rhone (Dedham, MA) set up rookie Nick Brunette (Chaska, MN) with a quick pas through center ice for the freshman's first collegiate score. The Lord Jeffs doubled their lead, 2-0, with 52.9 seconds to play in the first period when senior Ted Vickers (Chilliwack, BC) pounced on an open puck after a faceoff in the Fitchburg zone.
Amherst continue its sure fire offensive just five minutes into the second period as Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA) and Eddie Effinger (Belleville, IL) teamed up for a solid one-timer. Arnold broke down the left side one-on-one with Falcon goaltender Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) and played a no-look pass back to a trailing Effinger for a one-time score to the top right corner.
Amherst added another pair of goals through the second frame and a trio of scores in the third to complete its 8-0 victory. Between the pipes, Leiser turned in a strong effort for Fitchburg State, turning away 42 of the 50 shots he faced. Amherst rookie net-minder Nathan Corey improved to 2-0-0 on the year with 16 saves for his second consecutive shutout to start his career.
Fitchburg State (5-3-1, 4-2-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Becker College at 7 p.m
