McAleer and McCready lead Falcons comeback with four goals combined
FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 13, 2009) - The Fitchburg State ice hockey team notched four unanswered goals throughout the third period to collect a 5-3 victory over Assumption College in comeback fashion this evening.

The Falcons (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will battle Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon for the IC Credit Union Shootout Championship, while the Ice Dogs (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) and Worcester State meet at 1 p.m. in the consolation round.
Fitchburg State received a solid effort from the sophomore duo of Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC) who combined for five points on four goals and one assist. McAleer paced the Falcons with two markers and one helper, while McCready added two scores, including his first score as a Falcon. Freshman Chris Costigan (Salem, N.H./Northern Cyclones) also came up big for the Falcons, totaling three assists, while Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H./Williston-Northampton) led Assumption with one goal and one assist.
Fitchburg State opened the scoring, striking midway through the first period as freshman John Vets (Hampden, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) connected for his second goal of the season off McAleer's and Costigan's helper.

The Falcons lead was short-lived however as Assumption connected three times in the second frame to take a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Kevin Glanzman (Massapequa, N.Y./NY Bobcats) started the Ice Dog rally with a marker at the 5:08 mark, while Adam Gaudreau (Londonderry, N.H./Tilton School) put Assumption on top with a score just 0:29 later. O'Kane capped the Ice Dog rally with his first goal of the year less than two minutes later.
In the third period, Fitchburg State stormed back, scoring four consecutive goals to clinch its championship round berth. McCready got the Falcons rolling just five minutes into the frame, connecting for a power-play goal off Costigan and Trevor Lawler's (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Huskies) assist, while McAleer lifted the Falcons with the equalizer at the 10:22 mark.
On the ensuing face-off, Fitchburg State continued to attack the offensive end as McCready recorded the eventual game-winner just 0:25 after McAleer's score. The sophomore forward found himself one-on-one with Assumption goaltender Steve DiDomenico (Lowell, Mass./Tilton School) and slipped the puck to the top left corner of the net to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead. Fitchburg State sealed the victory later in the period as McAleer added an insurance goal with his second tally of the contest.
Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front, posting a 42-21 advantage in shots and converting 2-of-8 p power plays. Sophomore Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) totaled 18 saves in his first start of the season for the Falcons, while DiDomenico stopped 37 shots for the Ice Dogs.
