Canter connects twice in Falcons ECAC Northeast setback
MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (January 28, 2009) - Freshman Bryan Canter (Anchorage, AK/Helena Bighorns) posted a team-high two points as Fitchburg State was edged by Becker College, 4-3 this evening in ECAC Northeast action.
Canter led the high-paced Fitchburg State attack with two goals in the match, while junior Andrew Hutton (Brewster, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) added one score. Freshman Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) guided the Falcon offense with a team-best two assists.

Freshman Nate Sayer (Dracut, Mass./Huskies) led all scorers with a game-high three points, posting one goal and two helpers. Freshman Patrick Bellew (Newington, Conn./CT Clippers) was also solid with one score and one assist, while freshman Trevor Peltak (Merrimack, N.H./Huskies) chipped in with two helpers.
Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period as Canter connected for his first score of the match at the 15:04 mark. Canter took a pair of assists from Threlkeld and Carey to post his third score of the season.
In the second period, Becker battled back, knotting the score at 2-2 as senior John Nogatch (Kirkland, Wash./Wayne State) and junior Mike Caprio (Valencia, Calif./Michigan Black Bears) recorded scores for the Hawks. Canter found the back of the net for the Falcons at the 16:25 mark for his second score of the game.
Hutton gave Fitchburg State a 3-2 advantage just 1:41 into the third period as he tallied his team-leading 13th goal of the season, but Becker countered with back-to-back to close out the period and clinch its ninth victory of the season. Bellew got on the board first for the Hawks, while Sayer netted the game-winner with only 3:24 remaining in regulation.
Fitchburg State dominated the offense front, out-shooting Becker 41-23 in the contest. Freshman Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) registered 19 saves in net for the Falcons, while junior Tony Stoehr (Depere, WI/River Falls) collected 38 stops for the Hawks.
Fitchburg State (7-7-4, 4-4-2 ECAC NE) will hit the ice again on Saturday as it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m. Becker (9-11-0, 7-5-0 ECAC NE) will host Southern New Hampshire on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
