Fitchburg State Blanks Worcester State, 1-0

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 18, 2010) – Senior Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) registered her second goal of the season to lead Fitchburg State past Worcester State University, 1-0 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.
Roma broke a scoreless 0-0 tie midway through the second half as the senior captain sent a solid strike on net from just inside the circle. Fitchburg State had been pressuring for a majority of the half, posting 11 shots on net, but Roma’s goal at the 51:40 mark prove to be the game-winner.
Both goalies played exceptionally well with Lancer junior Kat Masterjohn (Warren, Mass./Quabog) posting a game-high 13 stops between the pipes. Masterjohn was tested throughout the contest with Fitchburg State holding a 23-3 advantage in shots and 13-2 margin in corners. Her Fitchburg State counterpart, sophomore Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) mirrored Masterjohn throughout the game, posting her first shutout of the season with one save in the complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (2-2, 1-1 LEC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Rivier College at 4 p.m. Worcester State (2-4, 1-1 LEC) will visit WPI on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
