Fonck win it for the Falcons in Walk-Off fashion over Plymouth State
FITCHBURG, Mass. — The Fitchburg State baseball team delivered one of its most dramatic finishes of the season, walking off Plymouth State with a 6-5 victory in MASCAC action on April 24.
The Basics
Score: Fitchburg State 6, Plymouth State 5
Records: Fitchburg State (9-23, 6-13 MASCAC), Plymouth State (3-22, 2-9 LEC)
How It Happened
Fitchburg State (8-23, 6-13 MASCAC) appeared in control early before surrendering a late lead, but responded with a clutch ninth-inning rally to secure the win. Plymouth State (3-22, 2-9 LEC) mounted a four-run comeback in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 advantage, only to see the Falcons answer immediately in the bottom half.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues by Plymouth State. Nathaniel Badzmierowski reached on an error that allowed two runs to score, and Jason Kelly followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0. Fitchburg added another run in the fifth in unconventional fashion, as Kelly stole home to extend the lead to 4-1. On the mound, Fitchburg received a strong start from Ryan DiSano, who tossed three scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The bullpen pieced together several effective innings, with Nolan Stys, Luke Charron, Thomas Watts, Marco Carrillo, and Jack Castrichini combining to hold Plymouth State to just one run through eight innings.
However, the ninth inning proved chaotic. Plymouth State took advantage of control issues and timely hitting, stringing together a rally highlighted by a two-run double and another clutch hit that gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead. Facing defeat, Fitchburg State responded with poise in the bottom of the ninth. Jason Kelly and Nathaniel Badzmierowski reached base to set the stage before Tyler Fonck delivered the biggest swing of the game, lining a two-run single to right field to score both runners and complete the walk-off victory. Offensively, Fitchburg totaled six hits but made the most of its opportunities with aggressive baserunning and patience at the plate. The Falcons drew seven walks and stole multiple bases, including three from Jason Kelly, whose all-around performance helped spark the offense. Badzmierowski added a triple and scored twice, while Fonck drove in two runs, including the game-winner. Defensively, Fitchburg battled through four errors, but timely pitching and late execution allowed them to overcome the miscues.
