Falcons fall 13-3 in game one; rebound with 9-6 victory in game two
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 25, 2009) - The Fitchburg State baseball team registered a 1-1 split with host Framingham State College this afternoon in MASCAC action. The Falcons dropped game one 13-3, before rebounding with a 9-6 victory in game two.

Sophomore John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) paced the Fitchburg State game-one attack, hitting 2-for-4 with a triple, while classmate Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) went 1-for-2 with a homerun, one run scored and two RBI. Sophomore Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) added two base-hits to the Falcons offense.
Sophomore Jason Hutchinson (Kingston, Mass./Curry) led the Framingham State attack with a 3-for-4 day, including a double and two runs scored, while sophomore Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) finished 3-for-5 with a homerun, a run scored and five RBI. Junior Ryan McCarthy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was also solid with a single, double, run scored and one RBI.
Framingham State used the deep ball to its advantage, hitting three homeruns in the contest to collect its ninth victory of the season. Sophomore Joe Sheehan (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and freshman Chris Cole (Lynn, Mass./NSCC )gave the Rams an early 4-1 as the pair belted a set of two run homeruns in the second and third inning. The Rams continued to pump its offense, scoring three more times in the sixth inning on a three run blast by Tramontozzi.
Freshman Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass./Saint Bernards) suffered the loss for the Falcons (2-3), yielding five earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Matt Nicholson (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) earned the victory for the Rams (4-6), tossing a complete game, nine-hitter, allowing two earned runs while striking out one.

Senior John Davison (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) led the Falcons to a game two victory, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, homerun (2), one run scored and two RBI, while Graham and sophomore Nick Rocheleau (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) added a single and a double apiece. Phelan inched closer to Fitchburg State's all-time single season hits mark of 54 with a bunt single, giving him 53 hits on the year.
Junior Dave Leach (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) led the Rams in game two, hitting 2-for-3 with a homerun, one run scored and two RBI. Cole was also solid for the Rams, belting his second homerun of the day with two RBI, while Tramontozzi finished 2-for-4 with two base-knocks.
Fitchburg State opened the contest with an early 3-0 lead in the first frame and used a five run third inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Framingham State battled back with three runs in the sixth on homeruns by Leach and Cole, but senior Dennis Jennette (E. Brookfield, Mass./David Prouty) came on in relief for the Falcons, posting two strikeouts to shut the door.
Graham and senior Kris Breen (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) got the Falcons going in the first with an RBI apiece, while Davison capped the five run third with a towering, two-run homerun. Sophomore Chris Smart (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) added a two RBI base hit the fifth and Breen rounded out the Falcons scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.
Senior Andy Sauer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) earned his third victory for the Falcons, battling through 5.1 innings on the hill with one strikeout. Freshman Rob McLaughlin (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) suffered the loss for the Rams in the complete game effort, allowing four earned runs over six innings of work.
Fitchburg State (18-15, 5-9 MASCAC) will be in action again on May 4 as it travels to MIT at 4 p.m. Framingham State (9-22, 4-10 MASCAC) will host Newbury College on Monday at 3 p.m.
