Amy Fahey, Women's Basketball
After a tough loss to Worcester State in the MASCAC quarterfinals last February and the loss of six key seniors, the Fitchburg State women’s basketball team is ready to bounce back with high hopes for post season honors, and it has just the right person paving the way.
Sophomore forward Amy Fahey (Wilminton,Mass/Wilmington) has been leading the Falcon offense averaging nearly a double-double with 22.9 ppg and 9.2 rpg, and she’s doing it all from inside the paint. She leads the fast break and runs the floor better than anyone in the league, while still being able to find the bucket under pressure. Not only is she leading the offense, but she’s a force on the boards, where she is second on the team in rebounding.
Fahey had a breakout rookie campaign ranking second on the team in scoring (8.1 ppg), first on the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg), as well as first on the team in field goal percentage, shooting 53% from the floor. Her follow up season has been nothing but exceptional, nearly tripling her points per game from a season ago, and the accolades don’t stop there. Fahey broke a twenty year scoring record when she dropped 39 points on UMass Boston, while adding eight boards. She’s also totaled four MASCAC Female Basketball Player of the Week honors thus far.
Fahey doesn’t just shine on the court, but also in the classroom and in the community. As an Early Childhood Education major, she plans on becoming a teacher, and has been excelling in the classroom, making the Dean’s list every semester. She also participates in an ALS walk every year to support finding a cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease. In her spare time Amy returns to Wilmington High School, to visit and volunteer with a group of special needs children, a group that she was actively involved with during her four years there.
The Fitchburg State women’s hoops team has high expectations as it battles for a bid in the MASCAC tournament, as well as having nothing but confidence in its leading scorer. “Amy is a great basketball player whose humble personality makes her great, not only to practice with, but to learn from,” says teammate Maddy Merchant. With five conference games left in the season, the Lady Falcons look to climb back to the top of the standings to win them a trip to the conference tournament and come back with a MASCAC title.
