Steele qualifies for DIII NE's in the shotput and hammer throw
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. –The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track and field team was in action this afternoon, competing in the 2017 Elmer Swanson Outdoor Track Classic Invitational, hosted by Wesleyan University.
Senior Morgan Steele paved the way for the Green and Gold, placing first overall in the shotput with a DIII New England qualifying throw of 11.04 meters, while also qualifying for DIII NE's in the hammer throw with first place toss of 45.85 meters.
Junior Shawna Ryan turned in a MASCAC qualifying time of 1:05.22 in the 400 meter with a sixth place finish, while in the 100 meter, junior Amanda Remie (13.78) and senior Olivia Milsted (13.92) finished first and third respectively.
In the 3000 meter, junior Nicole Gaffney posted a second place effort of 13:11.86, while junior Michaella Vecchiarelli placed third overall in the pole vault with a MASCAC qualifying height of 2.80 meters.
In the field, senior Melody Francis registered a post-season qualifying mark of 9.56 meters with a fourth place finish, while in the long jump, Francis (4.69m) and Milsted (4.40m) both qualified for MASCAC's, placing second and sixth respectively.
Senior Emilee Felton took top honors in the javelin with a post-season qualifying throw of 31.64 meters, while Steele rounded out the top Falcons performances on the day, placing fifth overall in the javelin with a MASCAC qualifying toss of 25.65 meters.
The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track team returns to action next weekend as it competes in the 2017 MASCAC/Alliance Outdoor Championships, hosted by Westfield State University on Saturday, starting at 10 AM.
