Fitchburg State Surges Past Westfield State, 7-1

McAleer collects four points in Falcons key MASCAC victory
WESTFIELD, Mass. (December 8, 2011) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team collected a season-best seven goals to surge past host Westfield State University, 7-1 in MASCAC action this evening.
Senior forward Thomas McAleer (Long Island, N.Y./New York Bobcats) tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Falcons to their third victory of the season and second win in the MASCAC. Fitchburg State broke open a tight game by erupting for five goals in the third period, handing Westfield State its sixth loss of the season.
The Falcons opened the contest with an early goal from Bryan Canter (Anchorage, AK/Helena Bighorns) as the senior forward collected his second goal of the season with helpers from McAleer and Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) just 1:39 into the game. Westfield State knotted the score at 1-1 with 4:31 remaining in the stanza on a goal from Tyler Prendergast, but the Falcons reclaimed their lead in the second period with a tally from McAleer (2-1).
In the third, McAleer and junior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) teamed up for the second time in the contest, giving Fitchburg State a 3-1 cushion with McAleer’s second score of the night. Senior John Soroka (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Little Flyers) found the back of the net just over a minute later to make it 4-1, before the Falcons tacked three power play goals in the final 11 minutes.
Fitchburg State (3-5-1, 2-2-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Plymouth State University at 6 p.m. Westfield State (2-6-2, 1-4-1) will hit the ice again after the winter break as it hosts Williams College on January 3rd at 7:35 p.m.
