Cordeau and Gull combine for five hits in non-conference setback

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped a 14-6 decision to the Bison of Nichols College on day three of its annual spring trip to Florida this afternoon at Henley Field.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 6, Nichols 14

Records: Fitchburg State (3-2) | Nichols (2-5)

How It Happened

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the bottom of the first as senior Sean Maki (Fitchburg, Mass.) drove in newcomer Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) with a ground out to third.

The Falcons took a 2-1 advantage in the following frame when sophomore Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) doubled to right field to bring home classmate Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) before the Green and Gold added two more runs in the fourth as newcomer Camden Santos (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Cordeau delivered with run scoring hits that plated sophomore Zachary Gull (Rutland, Mass.) and Santos for the 4-2 edge.

Nichols rallied to take a 10-4 advantage in the top of the fifth, scoring eight runs as freshmen Nathaniel Cormier (Sandisfield, Mass.) and Alexander Stroshine (Keene, N.H.) connected on back-to-back two-run singles.

Fitchburg State cut into the deficit (11-5) in their half of the sixth when Cordeau reached on a throwing miscue and came around to score on a double to right center off the bat of senior Drew Mazzeo (Leicester, Mass.).

The Green and Gold continued to battle in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore Andrew Curran (Leominster, Mass.) singled to center to bring home Gull, but that's as close as the Falcons would get as the Bison held on for the 14-6 victory.
