Paul K. Waring '38 Male Athlete of the Year

Matt Muolo
Men's Track
As a member of the men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Matt Muolo played a key role in the Falcons successful 2009-10 season.
He is a six-time recipient of the MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week honor, while also qualifying for six post-season honors including the Division III New England Championships, ECAC Championships and All-New England Championships.
He lifted Fitchburg State to the 2010 MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, competing in four events, while earning the DIII New England title in the discus. Muolo currently ranks fifth in the nation in the discus, while breaking Fitchburg State’s all-time record this season with a throw of 47.90 meters.

Carlos De La Rosa
Football/Men's Track
Carlos De La Rosa earns his Male Athlete of the Year honors after achieving amazing feats on three different teams this year.
As a member of the football team, De La Rosa collected four, post-season selections, including the NEFC All-Conference first team, ECAC first team and the Division III New England All-Region team. He became the Falcons all-time career leaders in touchdowns, while also breaking Fitchburg State's single season mark for TDs.
He also represented Fitchburg State highly with his efforts on the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, qualifying for the Division III New England Championships, ECAC Championships and All-New England Championships in both the triple jump and 200 meter dash.

Taylor Van Ahnen
Field Hockey
Taylor Van Ahnen, the 2010 Paul K. Waring '38 Female Athlete of the Year, is an individual who has definitely left her mark on the Fitchburg State athletic program, serving as the backbone of the 2009 MASCAC Championship field hockey team.
Van Ahnen led the Fitchburg State field hockey team to its first ever Little East Conference semifinal berth, while collecting three post-season honors in the process.
She was named to the Little East Conference, All-Conference first team and the ECAC All-Region second team, while giving Fitchburg State its first-ever Field Hockey All-American honor.

Chris Brecken
Ice Hockey
Chris Brecken is a young man who has succeeded both on the ice and in the classroom. He was a four-year member of the Fitchburg State ice hockey team, earning MASCAC All-Academic honors each of his four seasons with a 3.32 GPA in Business Administration.
More recently, this young man was recognized at the 33rd Annual Honors Convocation as the recipient of the 2010 Christopher Hughes Memorial Award for excellent work in the major of Business Administration.
In addition to his academic honors, he was named to the MASCAC All-Conference first team while serving as captain of the defensive line.

Emily Swan
Women's Soccer/Lacrosse
Emily Swan is a young lady who has consistently demonstrated extraordinary effort in both her academic and extracurricular activities. She has participated on two teams during her time at Fitchburg State, serving as goalkeeper of the women’s soccer team and captain of the women’s lacrosse team.
She currently holds a 3.84 GPA in Middle School English Education and has served as a three-year member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
In addition to her academic efforts, Swan was recently named to the 2010 New England Women's Lacrosse Alliace (NEWLA) All-Conference second team.

Matt Carey
Men's Soccer
Matt Carey is truly a leader in every sense of the word. He consistently motivated his peers by example as he demonstrated an outstanding work ethic in the classroom and on the field.
As a four year member of the men’s soccer team, Carey has served as the starting goalkeeper and captain, while also playing an instrumental role on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
In addition to his on field and off field qualities, Carey also played an instrumental role in the search for the new men's soccer coach. He was willing to go above and beyond to better the Falcons in the 2010 season.

Andrew Hutton
Ice Hockey
Andrew Hutton is a young man, who through his leadership guided his team to athletic excellence.
Serving as captain of the Fitchburg State ice hockey team, Hutton led the Falcons to their first MASCAC regular season championship in ten years.
He ranked fifth in the league in points and third overall in assists. For his efforts, he was named to the MASCAC All-Conference first team, while earning considerations for the New England Hockey Writers All-Region team.

Leigh Trzcinski
Softball
Leigh Trzcinski has been an extraordinary leader throughout her collegiate career.
As a four-year member and captain of the Fitchburg State softball team, this young lady has etched her name in the program record books, becoming the school’s all-time career hits leader. For her efforts, she the lone Falcon named to the MASCAC All-Conference first team
She has been an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, while also playing a vital role inside the athletic department.

Paul Taddeo
Men's Track
Paul Taddeo is a two-sport athlete, who at the age of 16 was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout his battle, this young man received the requisite surgery and chemotherapy, feeling the effects of the treatment both physically and emotionally. He missed more than six months of athletic related activity before being able to return to the track at some level.
Currently, Taddeo continues to compete at a high-level every year as member of the Fitchburg State indoor and outdoor track teams. He continues to monitor his body for the disease, while competing for the Falcons in many throwing events.
More recently, Taddeo helped the Fitchburg State men’s track team capture the 2010 MASCAC Outdoor Championship, placing sixth overall in the hammer throw.

Cody Bamforth
Baseball
Cody Bamforth is freshman, Criminal Justice major from Vernon, Connecticut. As a member of the Fitchburg State baseball team, he played a significant role in the Falcons lineup, seeing action in 25 games with 22 starts.
Over the course of the season, Bamforth batted .278, registering 20 hits in 70 at bats. He rankedfirst among all freshman, with seven runs scored, three doubles, two homeruns and nine RBI.

Jamie Kelley
Field Hockey/Lacrosse
Jamie Kelley is an individual who has made her mark on the Fitchburg State athletic program early and often.
In the fall, Kelley led the Fitchburg State field hockey program to a MASCAC Championship, ranking third on the team in scoring with 18 points on five goals and eight assists.
In the spring, she continued her dominance on the lacrosse field, leading the Falcons to their first ever playoff berth with 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists.
She is a two-time NEWLA Rookie of the Week honoree and a member of the NEWLA All-Conference second team.
