Mark Millett, Football
Junior member of the football team Mark Millett (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) used his success in the classroom to propel himself into a high profile internship in Washington, representing the Fitchburg State Athletic Department in distinguished fashion.
Millett, who began his college career as a nursing major, soon realized that he needed to follow a different path if he wanted to excel in a career in politics. Since he began his college career, he has been nothing but successful both on the field and in the classroom. Academically, he’s received Dean’s List honors several times, while seeing significant playing time in all three seasons he’s played football at Fitchburg.
Before the start of the semester, Millett landed himself an internship with Congressman Mike Ross, a Democrat from the 4th district of Arkansas. He received the internship through a program called The Washington Center. This program has connections with a variety of businesses and offices in D.C. one of which was with Congressman Ross. After being accepted into the program, Mark’s resume was sent to many different offices until he was fortunate enough to be picked up by Congressman Ross.
Millett’s internship involves a variety of different tasks ranging from answering phones, delivering documents around the Capitol, giving tours of the Capitol Building, as well as other various jobs the congressmen need done. His ID allows him to get into restricted areas of the Capitol without an escort, and he’s met people from all around the globe. “I love working for Congressman Ross’ office”, said Millett. “I get to see and meet people every day, and I get to do it in the center of the capitol of the most powerful country in the world”. Some of the many things he’s learned include how the inner workings of a country function, as well as how to function in a real world setting, while living n a very busy and professional city. He plans on becoming a prominent politician in Washington, and is using this internship as a stepping stone for his future career.
Mark cites his parents as having has the biggest impact on his life, and is grateful for the lessons they’ve taught him and the opportunities they’ve provided him with. His brother, who recently got a job in D.C. with the Justice Department, has also made a huge impact on his life, providing him with a little friendly competitions and a continued desire to strive for success.
Ultimately Millett dreams of eventually working for Congress, striving for a position in Washington, a place where he can make a real different and help people. “I’m doing what I love in a place that I want to end up”, said Millett. “I’m happier than I’ve ever been and I’m so grateful for this experience”.
